DEFINITIONS OF COURT CASE TYPES
AD - ADOPTION
An Adoption case number shall be assigned to every adoption case.
C - CIVIL
Prior to 1/1/96, many civil matters were filed as "C" cases in
Champaign County. These included what are now referred to as
CH, D, ED, F, MC and OP cases.
CC - CONTEMPT OF COURT
A Contempt of Court case number shall be assigned to any proceeding
for contempt of court initiated against a person who is not a party to
the action in which the contemptuous conduct allegedly occurred. The
CC category may be used in both civil and criminal contempt
proceedings against non-parties. This case type was first used in
Champaign County 1/1/96.
CF - CRIMINAL FELONY
A Felony case number shall be assigned when a complaint, information
or indictment is filed in which at least one count charges a felony.
CH - CHANCERY
A Chancery case number shall be assigned to a complaint for equitable
relief in matters such as foreclosures, trusts, and title to real
property. If any equitable relief is sought in a complaint, the case
shall be classified as a CH case unless the action is included under
another category.

Prior to 1/1/96, CH cases were filed as C cases in Champaign County.
CM - CRIMINAL MISDEMEANOR
A Misdemeanor case number shall be assigned when a case is filed in
which the most serious charge carries a penalty of less than one year
imprisonment. However, this does not apply to CC, CV, DT, OV or TR
cases, which are defined elsewhere in this section.
CV - CONSERVATION VIOLATION
A Conservation case number shall be assigned to any case defined by
Supreme Court Rule 501(c).
D - DISSOLUTION
A Dissolution case number shall be assigned to a complaint for
dissolution of marriage, annulment, or separate maintenance.

DT - DRIVING UNDER THE INFLUENCE
A Driving Under the Influence case number shall be assigned to any
case charging a violation of a statute, ordinance, or regulation
governing driving under the influence of alcohol, other drug, or
combination thereof. If, however, the offense is punishable upon
conviction by imprisonment in a penitentiary, the case shall be
assigned a CF number in accordance with Supreme Court Rule 501(f).
The results of a blood alcohol evaluation test, or failure to submit
to such a test, shall not be given a separate DT number, but shall
be an additional count of the DT case.
Prior to 1/1/96, DT cases were filed as T cases in Champaign County.
ED - EMINENT DOMAIN
An Eminent Domain case number shall be assigned to proceedings
involving compensation to an owner for property taken for public use.
Prior to 1/1/96, ED cases were filed as C cases in Champaign County.
F - FAMILY
A Family case number shall be assigned to a variety of matters
including proceedings to establish the parent-child relationship,
notice to putative fathers, and certain actions relating to child
support. NOTE: Petitions for Orders of Protection filed as separate
cases are filed under the OP category.

Prior to 1/1/96, F cases were filed as either C or L cases in
Champaign County.
J - JUVENILE
A Juvenile case number shall be assigned to any proceeding initiated
under the Juvenile Court Act of 1987 (705 ILCS 405/1-1 et seq.) except
those defined by the JA and JD categoreis below.
Where multiple counts are alleged, if any of those counts include JD
matters the case shall be filed as a JD case. If the multiple counts
include JA allegations but not JD, the case shall be filed as a JA
case.
JA - JUVENILE ABUSE
A Juvenile Abuse and Neglect case number shall be assigned to all
cases involving a neglected or abused minor as defined by the Juvenile
Court Act of 1987 (705 ILCS 405/2-3(1) and (2)). If a petition
contains additional counts under the Juvenile Court Act, the case
shall nonetheless be assigned a JA number; however, if any of the
counts are delinquency counts, the case shall be assigned a JD case
number.
JD - JUVENILE DELINQUENT
A Juvenile Delinquency case number shall be assigned to all cases
involving a delinquent minor as defined by the Juvenile Court Act of
1987 (705 ILCS 405/5-3(1)). If a petition contains additional counts
under the juvenile act, the case shall nonetheless be assigned a JD
case number.
L - LAW: DAMAGES OVER $50,000
A Law case number shall be assigned to tort, contract, and a variety
of other actions in which the damages sought are greater than $50,000.
The amount of damages contained in the complaint, excluding interest
and costs, determines the category, not the amount of the verdict of
judgment. If no specific amount is claimed, an L number shall be
assigned.

Prior to 1/1/96, LM, TX and some MR cases were filed as L cases in
Champaign County.
LM - LAW: DAMAGES $50,000 OR LESS (OTHER THAN SC)
A Law Magistrate case number shall be assigned to tort, contract, and
a variety of other actions in which the damages sought are $50,000 or
less. The amount of damages contained in the complaint, excluding
interest and costs, determines the category, not the amount of the
verdict or judgment. Note that a tort, contract, or tax collection
case in which the damages sought are $10,000 or less is assigned an
SC number.

Prior to 1/1/96, LM cases were filed as L cases in Champaign County.
MC - MUNICIPAL CORPORATION
Each municipal corporation shall have one permanent case number and
file folder for routine matters to be considered by the court. This
file will contain such matters as organization, appointment of
officers, approval of bonds, and routine orders confirming annexation.
A new case number and file folder should not be created when
additional documents of this nature are filed.
Excluded from the MC file will be matters which require more than
routine consideration by the court. For example, a local improvement
or a drainage assessment proceeding will have its own TX case number
and file; a petition for the conduct of an election regarding an
annexation will be placed in an MC file with its own MC case number.
Also excluded from the MC file is litigation involving the municipal
corporation as a party such as a suit against a city for personal
injuries--such cases will have their own L, LM or SC case numbers.

MH - MENTAL HEALTH
A Mental Health case number shall be assigned to proceedings involving
commitment, discharge, or restoration to legal status. When a
proceeding relative to a resident of Illinois is held in a county
other than the county in which the person resides and a transcript of
such proceeding is received by the circuit clerk of the county of such
person's residence, the clerk shall create a case file and asign it an
MH number. Change of status reports will also be placed in this file.
A petition for discharge or restoration is a new case if filed in a
county other than the county from which the petitioner was committed;
if filed in the same county, it is a post-termination proceeding.

MR - MISCELLANEOUS REMEDY
A Miscellaneous Remedy case number shall be assigned to complaints
seeking review of administrative decisions (other than of a tax
commission) and a variety of other actions that include change of
name, habeas corpus, and extradition.

Prior to 1/1/96, MR cases could have been filed as C, L or Criminal
cases in Champaign County.
OP - ORDER OF PROTECTION
An Order of Protection case number shall be assigned to any petition
for an order of protection. Prior to 1/1/96, OP cases were filed as
C cases in Champaign County.
OV - ORDINANCE VIOLATION
An Ordinance Violation case number shall be assigned to any case in
which violation of a local ordinance is charged. However, violation
of a traffic ordinance as defined by Supreme Court Rule 501(f) shall
be given a TR or DT number, as appropriate. Prior to 1/1/96, OV cases
were filed as Q cases in Champaign County.
P - PROBATE
A Probate case number shall be assigned to estates of decedents and
guardianship matters.

Prior to 1/1/96, in Champaign County all wills were assigned P numbers
whether they were to be probated or not. At that time, guardianships
were assigned W numbers. Since that time, W is no longer used and
guardianships are assigned P numbers. Also since that time, all wills
are assined WI numbers.
Q - Quasi-criminal
Prior to 1/1/96, what are now referred to as OV cases were assigned Q
numbers in Champaign County.
S - SMALL CLAIMS
See below for definition. This letter designation was used in
Champaign County for Small Claims cases before 1996.
SC - SMALL CLAIMS
A Small Claim case number shall be assigned to "...a civil action
based on either tort or contract for money not in excess of $10,000,
exclusive of interest and costs, or for the collection of taxes not
in excess of that amount" (Supreme Court Rule 281).

T - TRAFFIC
Before 1996, TR and DT cases were assigned T numbers in Champaign
County.
TR - TRAFFIC VIOLATION
A Traffic case number shall be assigned to any case defined by Supreme
Court Rule 501(f), except DUI cases. Note that a violation of a
traffic ordinance as defined by Rule 501(f) is given a TR number.
The following offenses are excluded by Rule 501(f) and should be
assigned the appropriate CF, CM, OV or CV case number:
- Cases in which a ticket is served by "tie-on", "hang-on", or
"appended" methods;
- Reckless homicide (720 ILCS 5/9-3);
- Reckless conduct (720 ILCS 5/12-5);
- Illinois Vehicle Code anti-theft laws (625 ILCS 5/4-100 et seq.);
- Any charge punishable upon conviction by imprisonment in a
penitentiary;
- "Jay walking" ordinances of any unit of local government;
- Any conservation offense (see Supreme Court Rule 501 (c)).
In accordance with Supreme Court Rule 552, each Uniform Citation and
Complaint form and conservation complaint shall be asigned a separate
case number.
Prior to 1996, TR cases were assigned T numbers in Champaign County.
TX - TAX
A Tax case number shall be assigned to the annual tax sale and a
variety of other actions relating to the collection of taxes.
Petitions for tax deeds and objections are part of the annual tax
sale proceeding and will be assigned sub-numbers of the annual tax
sale case number.

Prior to 1996, all guardianship matters were assigned W numbers in
Champaign County. Since that time they are assigned P numbers.
WI - WILLS
Since 1/1/96, all wills filed in the Champaign County Circuit Clerk's
office are assigned WI numbers. Previously they were assigned P
numbers.
